The Launch Code program automatically converts the UTC time to the local time of the forecast city. Why? Just as there is a difference in New York time and California time, there is a difference in UTC time and your local time. If the date of the UTC is for 0100 on July 4th or 1:00 am July 4th then this would equate to 9:00 PM on July 3rd for the east coast of the USA (DST). The data from the National Weather Service and the raw data screen is based upon Universal Time Code or UTC. Actually there is no difference in the time the weather events occur. Why?Ī) At first glance it may look like the dates generated by the Launch Code program are different. Q) I have noticed that the date on the raw data screen and National Weather Service web page is different than the date shown on the Launch Code forecast page. There is no reference given to the top of the cloud.Ī) See this page for help with understanding azimiths The cloudbase / ceiling is the elevation range of the bottom of the cloud. Q) Does the cloudbase / ceiling range show the forecasted top and bottom of the clouds?Ī) No. Q) Does the time correspond to the middle of the box or to either the left or right side of the column?Ī) The times shown going across the page is representative of the middle of the column that it is in.Ī) Altitudes are based upon Above Ground Level (AGL) for the height of cloud base. The results of these tests can be found at The National Weather Service has performed accuracy test on their forecast data. Just remember that there are no guarantees of accuracy or suitability for a particular purpose. We do get the occasional email that complains about the accuracy but 99% of all emails concerning accuracy have spoken highly of the quality of the forecast. We have found that the forecast are generally accurate and often very close. The temperature and wind speed graphs utilizes such an estimate by connecting the data with a straight line.Ī) You local accuracy may vary from week to week and season to season. You can estimate what the forecast might be at a particular time by using the times before and after the time you want. What is the forecast for other times than the ones shown?Ī) The National Weather Service only provides the data in 3 hour blocks. Q) The Launch Code time is 3 hour time blocks. If you find a city not listed on our site, please contact us and we will add the forecast to our database. You can check our list against the NWS list by visiting this page and comparing it to our list of cities. We believe that this list is the most current available but from time to time we do omit a city without knowing. Stem cells are now used to treat many conditions such as Alzheimer’s and heart disease. These cells are known as induced pluripotent stem cells. It was later discovered that adult tissues, usually skin, could be reprogrammed into stem cells and then form other cell types. His work was then published in an article in the journal Science. Scientists began deriving embryonic stem cells from mice in the 1980s, and in 1998, James Thomson isolated human embryonic stem cells and developed cell lines. The discovery of the cell continued to impact science one hundred years later, with the discovery of stem cells, the undifferentiated cells that have yet to develop into more specialized cells. Later discoveries further confirmed and solidified the role of the cell in heredity, such as James Watson and Francis Crick’s studies on the structure of DNA. In the 1880s, Walter Sutton and Theodor Boveri were responsible for identifying the chromosome as the hub for heredity-forever linking genetics and cytology. Another piece of the cell theory puzzle was identified by Rudolf Virchow in 1855, who stated that all cells are generated by existing cells.Īt the turn of the century, attention began to shift toward cytogenetics, which aimed to link the study of cells to the study of genetics. Eventually, other scientists began to uncover the truth. Similarly, Schwann claimed that animal cells “crystalized” from the material between other cells. Schleiden believed that cells were “seeded” by the nucleus and grew from there. However, Schwann and Schleiden misunderstood how cells grow. These scientists identified key differences between the two cell types and put forth the idea that cells were the fundamental units of both plants and animals. German scientists Theodore Schwann and Mattias Schleiden studied cells of animals and plants respectively. Many scientists believed that animals were made of “globules.” However, this was not so obvious for animal cells, which lack a cell wall. Scientists could readily tell that plants were completely made up of cells due to their cell wall. In the nineteenth century, biologists began taking a closer look at both animal and plant tissues, perfecting cell theory. In a letter to the Royal Society, he wrote, "I then most always saw, with great wonder, that in the said matter there were many very little living animalcules, very prettily a-moving.” He even took a look at the plaque between his teeth under the microscope. He went on to be the first to observe and describe spermatozoa in 1677. What van Leeuwenhoek saw with these microscopes was bacteria and protozoa, but he called these tiny creatures “animalcules.” He was a master microscope maker and perfected the design of the simple microscope (which only had a single lens), enabling it to magnify an object by around two hundred to three hundred times its original size. It was unsurprising that van Leeuwenhoek would make such a discovery. Not long after Hooke’s discovery, Dutch scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek detected other hidden, minuscule organisms- bacteria and protozoa. In observing the cork’s cells, Hooke noted in Micrographia that, “I could exceedingly plainly perceive it to be all perforated and porous, much like a Honey-comb, but that the pores of it were not regular… these pores, or cells,…were indeed the first microscopical pores I ever saw, and perhaps, that were ever seen, for I had not met with any Writer or Person, that had made any mention of them before this…” To him, the cork looked as if it was made of tiny pores, which he came to call “cells” because they reminded him of the cells in a monastery. Hooke detailed his observations of this tiny and previously unseen world in his book, Micrographia. These advancements allowed Hooke to see something wondrous when he placed a piece of cork under the microscope. His microscope used three lenses and a stage light, which illuminated and enlarged the specimens. Interested in learning more about the microscopic world, scientist Robert Hooke improved the design of the existing compound microscope in 1665. The discovery of the cell would not have been possible if not for advancements to the microscope. Although this knowledge is foundational today, scientists did not always know about cells. Cell theory also states that cells are the basic functional unit of living organisms and that all cells come from other cells. This idea, part of the cell theory, is one of the central tenants of biology. From the single cells that make up the most basic organisms to the trillions of cells that constitute the complex structure of the human body, each and every living being on Earth is comprised of cells. Although they are externally very different, internally, an elephant, a sunflower, and an amoeba are all made of the same building blocks. I take that cute teddy bear and I give it a bit of a shock - that bit of violence. “In my work I want to express not something merely pretty or cute, but to find something behind it,” explains Takahashi. There was a period in Takahashi’s work where he continually made monstrous-looking ‘Gila’ dolls (named after a species of venomous lizard) out of teddy bears, and a teddy bear with blocked-out eyes has become the brand’s unofficial mascot. The designer insists that, no matter the complexity or price of a garment, he imbues everything he produces with an equal degree of creativity, which appears to flow directly from his mind’s seemingly unbounded capacity for conjuring up a unique universe of intricate and slightly warped fantasies. Indeed, Takahashi’s label - which turns 25 this year and is celebrating the milestone with a major retrospective at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, a monograph published by Rizzoli and a men’s collection that riffs on the Undercover archives - is equally famous for its graphic t-shirts, favoured by teenagers, as its conceptual runway pieces. It's a view that is encapsulated in Undercover's motto - "We Make Noise, Not Clothes" - and reflected in its wildly imaginative collections, simultaneously sinister and playful, which broke down the divide between the street and the runway long before the rise of luxury streetwear. Otherwise, it's just cocktail dresses and bags - and that's not interesting." So says Jun Takahashi, designer of Japanese label Undercover, in a rare interview at the company's offices in the Tokyo neighbourhood of Harajuku. each longitudinal portion 12 of the base that is at the base ends of the frame, the wire or rod is bent into an upwardly extending post 14.the base has, therefore, both lateral and longitudinal portions which give stability in a simply constructed form.the base illustrated is bent into a three-sided U-shaped form or into a rectangular or square shape 11 from each end of which may extend a longitudinal portion 12.the base is formed by bending the center portion of the wire into any suitable form to form a base that has lateral and longitudinally extending portions in one or the same plane.the frame includes a base ill with longitudinal and lateral extending portions to give longitudinal and lateral dimension for stability of the loom.the bead loom comprises a frame made from a single length of wire or rod which is heavy enough for rigidity such as /8 of an inch in diameter.Figure 2 is a side view of the bead loom.Figure 1 is a top view of the bead loom.Another object of the invention is to construct a bead loom frame which constitutes merely a single heavy wire or rod which is bent laterally and longitudinally in one plane to form a stable base, a retainer or mount for thread spacing means, and each end of the frame providing a spindle for a thread securing and winding roll.Since bead looms are used primarily by children, it is desirable that the loom be as inexpensive as possible yet perform an effective mounting for the parallel threads and having stability in making a beaded article. the invention relates to a bead loom on which a series of parallel threads are supported and into which threads, beads are interwoven to make various beaded articles.D03D- WOVEN FABRICS METHODS OF WEAVING LOOMS.Google has not performed a legal analysis and makes no representation as to the accuracy of the date listed.) In general, structures in the specimen will appear darker, to various extents, than the bright background, creating maximally sharp images at magnifications up to about 1000⨯. Often, chromophores are artificially added to the specimen using stains, which serve to increase contrast and resolution. Different colors can behave differently as they interact withchromophores (pigments that absorb and reflect particular wavelengths of light) in parts of the specimen. In some cases, brightness can also be adjusted using the rheostat, a dimmer switch that controls the intensity of the illuminator.Ī brightfield microscope creates an image by directing light from the illuminator at the specimen this light is differentially transmitted, absorbed, reflected, or refracted by different structures. If less-than-maximal light levels are needed, the amount of light striking the specimen can be easily adjusted by opening or closing a diaphragm between the condenser and the specimen. The position of the condenser can be optimized using the attached condenser focus knob once the optimal distance is established, the condenser should not be moved to adjust the brightness. Light from the illuminator passes up through condenser lens (located below the stage), which focuses all of the light rays on the specimen to maximize illumination. In a brightfield microscope, this light is provided by an illuminator, which is typically a high-intensity bulb below the stage. Highly magnified images produced by microscopes, therefore, require intense lighting. When images are magnified, they become dimmer because there is less light per unit area of image. The coarse focusing knob is used for large-scale movements with 4⨯ and 10⨯ objective lenses the fine focusing knob is used for small-scale movements, especially with 40⨯ or 100⨯ objective lenses. Once the specimen is centered over the light, the stage position can be raised or lowered to focus the image. These knobs move the slide on the surface of the stage, but do not raise or lower the stage. Once the slide is secured, the specimen on the slide is positioned over the light using the x-y mechanical stage knobs. The specimen is placed on a glass slide, which is then clipped into place on the stage(a platform) of the microscope. The item being viewed is called a specimen. \): Components of a typical brightfield microscope.Ĭomponents of a typical brightfield microscope. |
